Using SkyText with Send SMS with Emoticon

SkyeText includes a total of 20 free emoticons (or 'smilies' as they're also known) that can be used whenever you send a text. After installing the app, whenever you click the 'New Message' icon on your S60 phone you'll have the option to select 'SkyeText' before you start composing your text. With this option selected you'll be able to insert the smilies by choosing 'Insert emoticon' from the 'Options' menu when you're writing. The SkyeText emoticons will automatically be used when you enter shortcuts, such as ':)' or ':D' or '8)'.

If you send as many texts as I do then you're probably sick of adding the same old smiley face expressions to your messages. With SkyeText you can liven up your SMS a bit by adding a new set of emoticons to your phone.

As you've probably guessed, SkyeText is very simple to use, and won't take you long to get your head around. The 20 emoticons included are all very well designed, and each face has bags of character. It's a shame they are all essentially based around the same visage though, so you won't find any cute animals or animated creatures here.

The biggest downer though is the fact that in order for the emoticons to show up in the message, the person you are sending the SMS to also has to have SkyeText installed. And the chances of convincing all of your friends to install it are pretty slim, I would imagine. The trial of the program is also pretty limited, with full functionality only lasting for one day.

A lot of us are still avid text messagers, not because we enjoy paying our carrier those tiring toll (or package) fees, but because it’s still one of the most reliable ways to get a text-based message to a cell phone user — not everyone has mobile IM clients or uses mobile email services.

Even web-based services are starting to recognize that, and recently there have been more and more companies launching “free” SMS options — most often free for those users who want to send a text to a cell phone via the web and email.

Sending free SMS from the Internet isn’t a new idea at all and companies have been developing the bridge between email and SMS for years. By now it’s a simple and easy service to set up and companies have started adding these services as a feature to bring in eyeballs.

Startups are also starting to get more creative with the business model (which was previously severely lacking) as well as the technology solution. At the same time they are learning to add privacy and best practices functions. Remember much of the time receiving the SMS message costs, and some of the services like free bulk messaging could have some not-so-nice spam potential. Be careful about signing up for any ol’ service and check out this list of good characteristics of SMS web services.

1). TeleFlip: TeleFlip has always been a favorite way to send “free” texts via email: ‘phone number’@teleflip.com. They still offer that service which they now call FlipOut, but they are also trying to turn their technology into a working business. I haven’t been able to test the new service yet (shown at DEMO), which is supposed to be out sometime this month, but they say it forwards your emails to your SMS inbox for free — 5,000 messages for per month. Hopefully they have a good management tool, as email spam can fill an SMS inbox pretty quickly and receiving text fees still apply.

2). Peekamo: Founded just November 2006 and based in Toronto according to their web site, Peekamo says they are different than other web-based SMS free sites, as both the receiver and sender don’t pay for the message. How do they manage that? — they say ad-sponsored messages, and using a protocol called short message peer to peer, (unlike the more common email-SMS method). When I sent a message from the web site to myself, it was sponsored by Sharp and had a link to Sharp’s web site www.moretosee.com. It’s still in beta, but is adding other social features.

3). Gizmo SMS: SIPphone has more than its fair share of sweet mobile services like the Gizmo Project, and earlier this month they also added a free web-based SMS service. The service works for dozens of countries and has a model ‘terms of service’ and privacy assurance sections. It’s not rocket science, but shows how these services are easy enough to create that they can be used to market the company’s other money-making solutions.

4). TxtDrop: TxtDrop founder 22-year-old Nate Kapitanski got some flack over his SMS MySpace widget and web service last year — the site didn’t launch with privacy terms and didn’t have an About section describing the company or its goals. He says the whole thing was a learning experience which helped make the site much better. As a result he added a privacy policy, email blocking, limited the number of messages that could be sent per minute, and says your phone number is now hidden in the MySpace code. Kapitanski, who only works on the project part time, also recently released a Mac OS dashboard SMS widget and says he is working on a Vista text gadget that could be out as early as April. There still isn’t a clear about section, but if you email the info address on the site, Kapitanski will probably oblige you on details you want to know.

5). Your carrier!? Yes, its true, some carriers have some limited web-to SMS and email to SMS services. On Verizon Wireless’ vtext.com site you can send a text to a Verizon wireless cell phone user, and send an SMS via email to “verizon wireless phone number”@vtext.com. Sprint has a similar web based service to text Sprint customers. They still get some money the more times people text using most solutions, so why not get more people to text their customers.

When you've got Sipgate set up as one of your Google Voice numbers, you can, basically make and receive calls from your computer as if it were just a large and awkwardly designed cellphone. You can still pick up calls to your main number on your cellphone or other lines, or just pick it up on your laptop or desktop, with a good headset or just your built-in mic and speakers. It also lets you send free text messages by choosing a contact’s mobile phone number if they are not online. Replies come back to the app, which could save you a dime each time.

When you leave the app to answer a call or do something else on your iPhone, your status is changed to idle. You can also sign out of the app entirely. (This is a workaround to the inability to have multiple apps running at the same time in the background on the iPhone).

SmartSMS enables you to send Caller Group Graphic, Operator Logo and Ringtones to your Nokia phone.

You don´t need a cable or infrared connection. SmartSMS sends the ringtone, logo or groupgraphic as a ordinary SMS so you only need a modem and a dial-up SMSC (SMS server) that supports the UCP protocol.

Hari ini Telkomsel bekerjasama dengan PT Waroeng Multimedia meluncurkan Layanan SMS JOB, yang merupakan layanan informasi pekerjaan melalui ponsel yang pertama kali ada di Indonesia. Layanan ini dapat dinikmati oleh pelanggan Telkomsel (kartuHALO, simPATI dan Kartu As) di seluruh Indonesia yang kini jumlahnya sekitar 18 juta atau mencapai 54% pengguna selular Indonesia.

Nokia Akan Jual Ponsel Ferrari Seharga USD 25.000

Unit barang mewah Nokia mulai menjual ponsel yang dirancang mendampingi Ferrari dengan harga sekitar 18.000 euro (USD 25.400) pada gerainya di London, Paris, Hong Kong dan Singapura.

Unit Vertu memproduksi ponsel Ascent Ferrari 60 buah untuk merayakan ulang tahun Ferrari yang ke-60.

"Kami tengah mengembangkan edisi terbatas dengan jumlah hanya 60 ponsel. Jumlah ponsel yang ditawarkan itu terinspirasi dari jumlah mobil Ferrari yang dibuat," kata juru bicara Vertu, Elizabeth Maragh.

Segmen produk mewah meraup keuntungan dari pertumbuhan pesat ekonomi di negara seperti China, India dan Rusia. Sementara pasar Timur Tengah menguat ketika ledakan harga komoditas mendongkrak pendapatan.

Nokia dan manufaktur ponsel lainnya makin meningkatkan kerja sama dengan para designer ternama. Awal minggu ini, designer asal Italia, Giorgio Armani, bekerja sama dengan Samsung Electronics untuk merancang televisi dan ponsel.

Untuk beberapa tahun ini, iklan menjadi pengendali kekuatan keuangan di belakang semua kesuksesan media seperti TV, Internet, dan surat kabar. Kini, dengan jatuhnya pendapatan suara pelanggan dan adanya kompetisi yang sengit, operator mobile menggambarkan iklan sebagai potensi sumber pendapatan baru.

Perangkat mobile berpotensi menjadi media iklan paling efektif yang pernah dikembangkan. Perangkat ini sifatnya pribadi, selalu ada, dan memungkinkan target tepat iklan berbasis informasi kontekstual seperti lokasi, profil user, dan riwayat penggunaan.

Laporan terbaru dari Strategy Analytics memprediksikan, iklan mobile nilainya bisa mencapai 25% pengeluaran iklan Internet global pada 2011. Laporan yang sama memprediksikan, iklan Internet mobile akan tumbuh hingga USD 14,4 miliar pada 2011. Tahun ini, iklan internet mobile mencapai USD 1,4 miliar. Tetapi akankah iklan mobile menjadi segmen industri lain yang mengalami popularitas besar atau dapatkah bisnis ini mendistribusikan nilai bagi konsumen?

Iklan mobile adalah salah satu dari beberapa media iklan efektif yang berpusat pada user. Dengan demikian, user experience menjadi faktor kunci kesuksesan yang harus dijaga di seluruh saluran distribusi. Operator harus menjamin bahwa mereka dapat mengembangkan model bisnis yang bergairah dan bersifat mendukung, sehingga tidak menjauhkan konsumen, apalagi merusak reputasi layanan di mata pelanggan.

Sementara itu, ketika pemirsa TV melihat iklan yang dibidik kurang baik selama berlangsungnya program favorit, hal itu tidak akan merusak persepsi terhadap penyedia layanan TV tersebut. Sementara jika user mobile secara terus-menerus menerima iklan pengganggu pada perangkat mereka, pihak operator akan disalahkan.

Di lain pihak, memutuskan waktu dan pelanggan mana saja yang harus diekspos untuk iklan memang cukup rumit. Hal tersebut tergantung pada banyak faktor, seperti rancangan harga langganan, penggunaan konteks, prosedur, dan regulasi. Kesepakatan harus diraih antara konsumen dan provider layanan untuk merefleksikan kewajiban akhir dalam melindungi kerahasiaan. Jaminan kepuasan konsumen juga akan menjadi proses rumit. Pengalaman buruk kemungkinan akan menggambarkan kejelekan provider layanan dan kemungkinan menyebabkan konsumen menolak iklan di kemudian hari.

Operator mobile juga harus meyakinkan iklan menjadi situasi yang sama-sama menguntungkan. Hal ini akan diraih dengan pemilihan selektif pelanggan mana yang akan menerima iklan dan penyajian iklan mana yang sangat bernilai bagi mereka. Operator harus menawarkan pelanggan pilihan masuk dan keluar secara penuh dan menjamin mereka dengan berbagai keuntungan keuangan untuk mengubah dukungan dalam menerima iklan tersebut.

Memang, penargetan iklan untuk setiap individu user adalah penting dalam menjaga pengalaman yang memuaskan. Iklan mobile juga harus diadopsi ke perangkat mobile dan saluran akses sehingga dapat dihadirkan. Menyediakan layanan iklan yang intuitif dengan aksi interaktif, seperti pilihan click to call atau click for info sadar konteks pada tahap selanjutnya akan mendukung pengalaman positif.

Jika sebuah iklan tidak mengganggu, mendistribusikan nilai, melindungi kerahasiaan pelanggan, menstimulasikan perhatian dan relevan bagi konsumen, maka akan terdapat kecenderungan adopsi yang tinggi. Sementara itu, operator mobile harus 100% menjamin kualitas informasi yang dipunyai setiap user. Nama dan alamat sendiri belum cukup memadai. Operator harus kenal baik dengan minat user dan pilihan untuk menjamin pemahaman user.

Mengenai data user ini, informasi profil pelanggan dikumpulkan dari semua sumber yang ada (contohnya tagihan, CRM, dll). Pembuatan profil user yang dinamis, berdasarkan informasi kebiasaan user, termasuk konsumsi konten dan reaksi untuk kampanye sebelumnya akan menjamin bahwa pelanggan diekspos hanya untuk iklan yang berhubungan.

Belanja Konten Mobile
Pengalaman belanja konten mobile dewasa ini bersaing di kelas remaja dan dewasa muda, tetapi sering kali tidak seimbang jika dibandingkan dengan layanan serupa pada PC. Bagaimanapun, terdapat potensi besar untuk pengiklan dalam mengeksploitasi konsumen mobile kalangan muda. Segmen ini akan mencakup iklan pribadi dan kampanye kesadaran selama kontennya relevan. Jika sukses bisa diraih, akan terdapat beberapa keuntungan yang ikut menyertai operator. Keuntungan layanan adalah cara efektif untuk memanfaatkan penggunaan layanan mobile di tingkat selanjutnya dengan subsidi konten premium dan merendahkan batasan biaya konsumsi layanan.

Contohnya, hanya sebagian kecil user mobile mau membayar layanan mobile TV. Akan tetapi, banyak juga yang ingin menontonnya jika gratis. Cara yang paling jitu untuk mengatasi hal ini adalah dengan iklan atau tawaran yang benar-benar mendapat subsidi. Operator juga perlu memfokuskan diri pada penerapan pendekatan holistik mobile sentris untuk iklan.

Iklan mobile memang mempersembahkan kesempatan besar bagi provider layanan mobile. Dengan meningkatkan aset dan posisi saat ini sebagai pemain utama dalam rantai nilai iklan, kesempatan bisnis iklan mobile dapat dimaksimalisasikan dan risiko kegagalan pun dapat direduksi. Di lain pihak, operator harus menyadari bahwa user experience dan fleksibelitas adalah faktor kesuksesan utama. Dengan tingginya tingkat personalisasi, yang membidik kemampuan dan keterbukaan, operator akan menyadari kayanya potensi iklan mobile dan menjamin kesuksesannya.

Mau Laptop Murah?

Punya laptop harga Rp 2 jutaan? Bisakah terealisasi? Itulah sebuah gebrakan notebook murah yang dilakukan Asus. Dengan target pasar yang diarahkan untuk menjangkau anak-anak dan orang tua, notebook ini bisa dijadikan sebagai PC kedua. Asus pun mengambil sikap berani untuk menghadirkan notebook dengan harga yang terbilang oke punya.

Rencananya, laptop yang harganya berkisar USD 349 - 499 ini, sudah bisa diluncurkan di Indonesia pada Q4 tahun ini. Harga yang ada memang tergantung tipenya. Akan tetapi, dengan kisaran harga di bawah rata-rata, tentu saja membuat banyak orang menunggu-nunggu kapan Asus akan meluncurkan laptop ini di Indonesia.

Menurut Juliana Cen, Senior Marketing - Indonesia Southeast Asia Sales and Marketing Dept Asia Pacific & MEA Sales Group ASUS Technology Pte Ltd, dengan ukuran kecil dan murah, laptop ini juga sudah dilengkapi dengan kemampuan untuk koneksi internet plus fasilitas wifi 802.11b/g. "Tunggu saja tanggal mainnya," ujar Juliana ketika ditanya mengenai detil waktu peluncuran laptop ini.

Lantas bagaimana dengan pilihan warna? Selain harga murah, pengguna biasanya akan merasa lebih stylish ketika pilihan warna laptop juga mendukung gaya mereka. Maklum, masalah laptop trendi skarang menjadi salah satu pertimbangan ketika membeli komputer jinjing ini. Asus pun tak ketinggalan "melirik" masalah ini. Tak heran bila Asus kemudian memberikan alternatif warna seperti hitam, putih, hijau, biru, dan pink untuk membuat penggunanya supaya kelihatan lebih stylish.

Sementara itu, kendati harganya terbilang sangat terjangkau, bukan berarti minim fasilitas. Pemiliknya bisa bergaya karena ada beberapa tipe laptop yang akan dikeluarkan Asus yang juga dilengkapi kamera. Tak heran bila tipe 4G/512M/4cell(2.6) tergolong laris manis saat diluncurkan di acara Computex di Taiwan beberapa waktu lalu. Spesifikasi lain yang dimiliki laptop tipe 4G/512M/4cell(2.6) di antaranya Intel’s 910 mobile chipset, 900MHz Intel Dothan based Pentium M CPU, 512MB of DDR2 memory, full 802.11g wireless capability, 4 GB flash-based hard drive, four USB 2.0 ports, audio & microphone port, 10/100 Ethernet port, 56K phone modem port, VGA output, flash card reader, baterai 3 jam dengan berat: 890 gram. Dengan spesifikasi ini, tentu saja pengguna Linux akan lebih terbantu. Maklum operating systemnya menggunakan default linux. "Tapi, bisa pakai Microsoft juga kok," ucap Juliana saat ditanya basis OS notebook ini.

OLPC
Masalah notebook murah memang sudah lama menjadi bahan pembicaraan di mana-mana. Bahkan notebook 100 USD ini telah terealisasi dan menjadi suatu proyek MIT dengan motivator utama Nicholas Negroponte. Tak heran bila nama keren laptop 100 USD ini kemudian dikenal dengan nama OLPC (One Laptop Per Children).

Dulu, tujuan OLPC ini sebenarnya menjadi alat pembelajaran paling potensial untuk anak-anak di negara berkembang. Laptop ini kemudian didesain dengan mengerahkan kolaborasi antara kalangan akademia dan industri. Hasilnya, OLPC ini pun bersifat lebih fleksibel, ultra-low-cost, dan lebih efisien dalam penggunaan power. Tak heran bila kemudian negara seperti Brazil, Libya, dan Thailand ikut serta menyerbu produk ini untuk membantu memasyarakatkan IT sejak usia dini.

Berangkat dari pengalaman yang sudah ada, saat ini vendor pun kemudian berpacu untuk menghadirkan solusi hardware yang lebih murah namun elegan kepada masyarakat. Jika memang kualitasnya tidak mengecewakan, dijamin sebuah produk pasti laku di pasaran. Bagaimana tanggapan vendor lain?

Transfer Uang Lewat SMS

Chip khusus dan P2P Payment kini membentuk ponsel menjadi pengganti uang tunai, terutama di lingkungan sekolah. PayPal, layanan pembayaran dari anak perusahaan eBay, baru saja mengembangkan tawaran transfer uang secara mobile.

Layanan bernama Mobile Checkout ini memungkinkan user dari AS, Kanada, dan Inggris, kelak dapat membayar belanja online mereka melalui ponsel. Dengan layanan ini anak perusahaan eBay tersebut berposisi lebih kuat dalam segmen kecil tapi menjanjikan bagi user mobile Web.

PayPal di negara-negara tersebut sejak 2006 lalu telah mengoperasikan layanan pembayaran mobile yang berbasis SMS. Sementara "Mobile Checkout" berperan sebagai pelengkap tawaran yang ada untuk kelompok user yang masih lebih kecil. "Kami yakin, pada 2007 dan 2008 makin banyak pebisnis yang akan menggunakan M-Commerce," komentar juru bicara PayPal, Jamie Patricio, tentang situasi tersebut. Ia juga memperjelas bahwa pada tema pembayaran via ponsel secara umum prinsip itu cukup menjanjikan.

Sementara itu, perkembangan dari transfer uang menggunakan ponsel (m-Payment), sejauh ini hanya ada di negara berkembang dan miskin. Justru M-Payment ini mengalami kesuksesan. Di negara-negara tersebut, transfer uang secara mobile digunakan sebagai transaksi pembayaran mikro. Hal ini dapat diterapkan oleh pihak-pihak yang tidak memiliki akun bank tertentu. Di negara industri kaya, penyebaran ponsel lebih luas sebagai sarana pembayaran tertentu dapat mengalami kerugian. Hampir semua orang memiliki rekening, kartu debit dan kredit. Oleh karena itu, kurang dibutuhkan layanan baru.

Walaupun posisi awal masih tidak pasti, transfer uang secara mobile berdasarkan ramalan Juniper Research di negara industri hingga 2011 volume omsetnya akan mencapai USD 22 miliar. Distribusi chip otentikasi dalam ponsel dengan nama P2P Transfers didorong oleh perkembangan kultur.

Di Asia chip tersebut terdistribusi dengan cukup besar saat ini. Chip tersebut dapat digunakan untuk melakukan pembayaran, di mana ponsel cukup diayunkan ke reader khusus dan proses selanjutnya dikonfirmasikan dengan penekanan tombol tertentu. Untuk penyebarluasan NFC secara global, koordinasinya akan ditangani oleh Nokia dengan penyedia kartu kredit, Mastercard. Menurut Juniper Research, pada 2011 secara global sebanyak 52 juta ponsel akan difasilitasi dengan chip NFC tersebut.

"P2P Tansfers" mengandung arti tergantung "Peer-to-Peer," bursa lalu lintas Internet, transfer uang antara orang perorangan. Transfer "Person-to-Person" dewasa ini menjadi hal yang penting dari semua transaksi uang tunai. Sedangkan menurut Juniper, di kalangan muda terdapat peralihan dengan munculnya transfer ponsel ke ponsel.

Sistem SMS pun seperti itu. Seperti apa yang ditawarkan PayPal sejak 2006. Seperti yang terjadi di negara berkembang, pembayaran SMS dari ponsel ke ponsel menjadi hal yang konvensional. Para remaja di lingkungan sekolah Amerika dan Jerman segera dapat menyelesaikan pembayaran mikro mereka dengan pesan teks. Sebagai gantinya, rekening bank dalam penerimaan klasik, neraca ponsel berfungsi sebagai rekening pribadi.

Agaknya judul di atas memang mungkin tepat ditujukan untuk kita semua, termasuk saya ;). Apa buktinya?

Sebagai pemain baru di dunia blog, blog yang saya buat paling-paling dikunjungi oleh jumlah orang yang jika dihitung dengan jari tangan niscaya tidak akan penuh. Beberapa blog saya semuanya seperti itu.

Terlintas suatu ketika, saya buat sesuatu yang lain dari yang lain yang saat itu saya pastikan bahwa akan banyak orang yang singgah ke blog saya ini.
